Hi,
I have a 1971 spider with an Ansa twin tip exhaust. I was wondering if anyone has ever welded a patch directly on the muffler or should I just throw it out.
Thanks,
John

Re: Ansa - Stupid Question welding muffler
While welding is possible (or patching with muffler tape of some description), the metal around the rusted area is probably not much better, so getting a decent weld may be difficult. A number of our vendors sell "performance" rear mufflers that are less expensive than the Ansa twin tip exhaust. Or get a local exhaust shop to fab something up in a slightly larger tube diameter. I think you can go to about 2" over the axle. Lots of threads here on exhaust options.

If the outside casing of the muffler is shot, it is probably a good bet that the interior is shot too.

Re: Ansa - Stupid Question welding muffler
The bottom of my old Ansa was rusted out. Mine was especially noisy as I do not have the middle resonator and has headers from PO. Being cheap i got a piece of sheet metal from Home Depot with some self taping screws and put about 14 screws or so around it. When it rusts or blows out I will replace with another - I really like the looks and sound. It was just not a convenient time to do the replacement.

Re: Ansa - Stupid Question welding muffler
The gent who taught me to weld would cut the old muffler apart to use as a pattern and make a new one himself out of some pretty heavy gauge stainless steel and would add a drain plug to further insure its long life. His mufflers would outlast the cars.
