Smoke from the dash!

My 82 Spyder on the whole has always been reliable, but the heater was always a bit iffy. My thought was that it was cable related and that the controls weren't working properly to move the air where it should go. Lately moisture began forming on the center lower of the windshield, even with everything for the vent system shut off and all of a sudden.............smoke and the smell of burning rubber from under the dash. I haven't had a chance to pursue the issue, but has anyone had a like problem, or any ideas on what could be going on under there?? Thanks
