Gas leak after spirited drive.

Post by Funcar »

After my 2nd day driving my spider, having just go it plated, I parked it in the garage. I was making lunch and could smell gas. Went out to the garage and gas was dripping onto the floor from the front drivers side. Here is what I found leaking.

The hose was leaking from the lower cut hose. You can see that the hose is wet where it joins the metal line.. This hose had been previously cut and you can see the other end in my hand goes into what my manual calls a Weber electro-valve.

I couldn't hear the pump running so I remembered reading about pressure buildup in the tank so removed the gas cap which stopped the flow. I took off he lower piece of hose which was connected to the steel line and found it had 2 sections. I'm not sure what it is, perhaps just a connector?

So that is my situation and I am looking for advice as I want to drive the car to storage by Tuesday. I have already purchased 3 feet of replacement gas hose. Side note.....glad I don't have a propane heater running in my garage!!

My car is fuel injected, so I can't offer advice on your car's particulars. But I would suggest that you plan to go through your entire fuel system and replace all the hoses (when convenient); if one hose is leaking then others are likely in similarly poor condition. When I did mine, I found several hoses that were cracked and on the verge of leaking. My car always had the odor of raw fuel, and that's totally gone now. I'd then get all your vacuum hoses too,

those original hoses are worn out, replace ALL of the fuel lines from the tank to the carb or risk a disaster

Thanks and yes I will be replacing all the rubber gas line and vapor system hoses. Does anyone have the diagrams for the 73 spider?
