The quickly broken end likely means it wasn't seated correctly in the end of the clutch pedal. I have found that a little grinding on a bench grinder (on the little half-moon thing) helps everything go together much more easily.

The mating surfaces need to be smooth and slippery so the cable end does not bind. A little dab of white grease can do wonders too.
