Identify where this hardware came from?

Post by Turbofiat124 »

I was putting my top up on my Spider today when I heard something fall into the passenger side pocket where the quarter window and top fold into.

I looked at the inside of the top with it up but can't figure how where this flat washer and Allen head screw goes. It did not seem to effect the operation of putting the top up. Nothing seems unusual. I'm wondering if it has something to do with the tension cables that run underneath the top.

My top is a bit worn and needs replacing. It's been on the car since 1993! Which is twice as long as the original top. I've had to patch the seem where the window and vinyl meet with silicone and packing tape where it has started to rip.

There is also a clip that has broken off that a screw goes into.

Anyone know where these parts goes?

The large washer and flat head screw looks like the ones that hold the convertible top frame to the quarter panel. Look inside the rear quarter pockets. Also could be extra parts from a PO

The screw is one of the four that attach the convertible top frame to the car, the washer is used as a spacer between the top frame and the plastic pocket and the steel tab should be spot welded to the body and guides the top tensioning wire to where it attaches to the body.

yes remove the pocket you found them in then you should be able to tell where they are from
if you cant then remove the other side pocket
once you are in there be sure to tighten all bolts
when you do everything correct people arent sure youve done anything at all (futurama)

Thanks guys. I figured it came from the top frame but the location of the screw is what baffles me. I had to go to work so I didn't have much time to look for where it went. I'll check it out tomorrow.

Found it!

This one here is near the door jam at the top and is loose. It only seems accessible with the top down.

Here is where the missing screw and washer goes. It only seems accessible with the top up. I just took a quick glace but appears it goes behind the pocket so that may have to be removed first.

Hopefully I can get a star tool in there. I have some star wrenches and sockets leftover from when I owned my Jeep. I hope they are the same and will fit these screws.

If it was behind the pocket, how did it get in the pocket?

Well good question.

Maybe the bolt goes through the bracket, then through a hole in the pocket and into the chassis. But yeah the bolt and washer somehow landed inside the pocket when I put the top up.
