Brake disc heat.

Post by beater »

I have had a light screeching metal on metal noise coming from my back passenger side wheel for a while and decided to investigate. I pulled over to check the wheels and the disc was quite a bit hotter than the drivers side but about the same as the front two discs. Are the backs typically hotter after braking or the same as the front. I'm thinking front would be hotter due to the fact they do most of the braking but if that is the case maybe my rear passenger side is dragging?

Time to pull your caliper and inspect. Chances are your brakes are metal on metal.

If it's just the one side, then you might pull the wheel and have someone actuate the e-brake lever while you watch the caliper to see if it's moving.

Bearings are not that old, and it does not sound like a bearing noise. When I first started investigating I found one of the bolts that holds the caliper mounting bracket was stripped. I thought that may be letting the anti rattle clip move in and hit the rotor but I replaced the mount and bolts and it still makes the noise on occasion. Also as I mentioned that side runs hotter that the other. Funny because when I jack it up that side does not seem to drag any worse than the other. Even if I press the brakes and release it does not seem to drag, just typical light pad on the disc noise.
