Tanks alot

Post by pope »

I was wonder if anyone has done a gas tank reline and what is involved. On the Fuel injected tanks, what is on the inside of tank? Is it just the metal tubes or are there fine screens and such that we can not see. Anyone done a POR 15 tank kit?

I used the POR-15 kit successfully (but then, the older cars are tougher than the newer ones) 8)

It takes about a week to do the job. If you can find a computer cooling fan, jerry-rig it to the filler opening; it will assist in drying out the tank between steps.

Thanks Guys, I found KBS Coatings, has a three part kit that is good for 12-14 gallon tanks which is perfect for the 11.4 Fiat tank. I mig welded the center seam all the way around and it looks great. Very solid and the tank looks awesome again. Some 2K epoxy primer on the outside and we are in business again. I could have just gotten a new one, but I am sentimental to the original parts. Took a lot of time to refurbish but well worth it.

pretty brave, welding a fuel tank. Did you fill it with water first?

For what it's worth at this point in the discussion, I did my '81 FI tank with POR15. It was not easy, but I am satisfied with the results. There is nothing in the tank but baffles and the pickup tubes (no screen) so plugging things up is not an issue. The first problem is getting everything coated. It is entirely possible that I missed some bit of a surface, despite turning and turning the tank this way and that.

The bigger problem is getting it all drained out (the excess POR15). There is no exit point on the tank that allows a complete drain. In hindsight, I would have put a drain plug into the lowest point of the tank. Nice for future tank draining too. I spent hours trying to get the last of the stuff drained out, and actually resorted to mopping up some of it with a rag on a stick (through the fuel level sender opening).

In the end, I'm happy with it, but it might have been easier to have had it cut open and rewelded by a rad shop.

Do you think I should have taken the tank off the car first before welding? It was only half full of 87 octane, which we all know is pretty weak gas. I put a lit cigarette into the sender hole to see how the walls looked.

Did more research on sealers. KBS Coating and POR 15 tank sealer kits are the same, they are a one part moisture cure urethane.

Bill Hirsh makes a red label product that is alcohol resistant and has a rust prevetative. Problem with this is that you cannot use gas treatments with it, like STP or Gumout. They will start to dissolve the coating which I think is PVC based.

Caswell Plating makes a PHENOL NOVOLAC EPOXY GAS TANK SEALER. It is a 2-part and is impervious to fuels and chemicals.

Wondering if someone has a pic of the inside of a FI Spiders gas tank. I want to see where the tubes go to and whats on the other side of the baffels that I cant see behind. A drawing that someone could do would also suffice.
Thanks
