Shifter Replacement
Shifter Replacement
Does anyone have any tips on how to install a shifter while the transmission is still in the car? We've removed it and are having problems realigning the notch into its respective groove. Any info would be appreciated!
Re: Shifter Replacement
are you talking about just the chrome handle, the shift lever, or more?

Do you have the cover off the top of the tranny extension?

the answer to your question is an unequivocal maybe. depending on the extent of your disassembly.
is just the shift lever out, or is the shaft out as well? the shaft runs horizontal inside the length of the shift tower... while the shift lever is the verticle, bent lever that pivots inside the shaft.
the shift lever can be removed and installed while the transmission is in the vehicle. i've done it. it requires some laying on the concrete and sitting in the driver's seat (sometimes at the same time)... but it is doable.

Thanks for the responses. I've taken a couple of pictures that will hopefully illustrate the situation.
I think part of the problem may be that I have it in backwards. There is a rounded bump on one side and a cube-shaped ledge on the other. Is the rounded bump supposed to go in the groove on the driver's side, or is that for the cube-shaped ledge?

Re: Shifter Replacement
You are soooo backwards. Install it as if the small shifter portion is facing the right direction to shift with it. It should point to the rear seat.

and, of course, today i see this from the office, and my recently scanned copy of the shop manual concerning this particular assembly is on the home computer.
the plastic ball that is molded to the shift lever should have a "button" on the left side of the ball. Left, as if you were sitting in the driver seat and the center console is on your right (sorry OZ).
that "button" should rest comfortably against the anti-rattle clip which is on the left side of the socket. your anti-rattle clip is prolly missing...so the "button" should ride in the groove of the socket. now is a good time to replace that anti-rattle clip if it is missing.
dang, i miss my scanner and manual... anyway, the tip of your shift lever should point to the sky over the rear seat, not toward the windshield. your picture shows that you are 180° in the wrong direction.
also, i see that the upper right hand bolt is missing from the inspection plate. do you have that bolt, and the guard for the reverse gear selector?
do you have a quality rubber inner shifter boot? great item to help keep out dirt, heat, and noise. perfect time to replace that if it is torn or missing.
