Trunk gas smell

Post by micbrody »

I have gas smell in trunk. I first replaced all the fuel lines, vent line, and gas filler hose. I also used some puddy epoxy on part of tank that looked rusted (near a top corner of tank). All this greatly reduced smell; however I still have a small gas smell. I cannot identify any actual liquid leak. There are some slightly rusty areas (including epoxy area) that still have a faint smell when I put my nose up to it.
I read about rubbing bar soap on areas of tank that might have pinhole leak. So I took a bar of Irish Spring (a manly soap) and rubbed on all the rusty areas. Next morning: trunk barely had any gas smell.
So I believe I just have a few small pinhole leaks.
Question: anyone recommend a spray or brush on paint (epoxy?? based) to just apply on outside of tank that will seal the pinholes ?

With the availability of new tanks for such reasonable costs I would recommend just replacing the tank with a new one. The cost of many of those tank coatings will probably come close to the same amount however the new tank should last much longer and will be a lot safer.

I agree!! Replace the tank, that pin hole you may have is only the first visible sign of failure, there is a lot more corrosion if it has started to eat thru the tank. You may be able to patch this symptom but the next symptom may be a car fire!
