The tranny takes 1-3/4 quarts to fill. The Gl-1 is sold by Vicks and others. Our foreign friends have a different rating system (after all, API stands for American Petroleum Insitute) so some books will have a rating that doesn't apply to our system. If it says GL1, you are good to go.

From memory ( I will check tonight & post) the factory book says about 1.5 litres. Just keep squirting it in until it runs out the filler hole, then stick in the plug real quick. If you really want, give it a short run, then let it stand till DEAD COLD and undo the filler to check. Oil should 'just' ooze out the bottom of the hole.

BUT MAKE SURE you undo the FILLER BUNG. NOT the selector spring retainer JUST ABOVE IT or TWANG - OOPS !!!

Two quarts and you'll have a little left over. I bought mine from Vick's as well.

In doing my own research on the subject I saw that IAP reccomends and sells Redline 75W90NS as an all synthetic GL-1.
IAP also has 75W90 listed as a GL-5 different part number.
When I went to the Redline site it describes it as a "GL-5" I couldn't find anything that was listed as Gl-1 so I
found that curious... perhaps Redline has a GL-1 version they don't put on their website....

Hey Clark, how you doin?
Doing your research, you've probably found that the higher the GL #, the more additives are included: GL1 being pure mineral oil, and 5-6 being the highest level of phosphorous primarily. We should steer way clear of anything above GL3. Best of all use GL1. I went with an Amsoil synthetic in my last tranny, it had a GL1 rating but shortly after I put it in the tranny gave up the ghost. I was having trouble with 4th gear staying in so I wasn't using it. After about a month of synthetic 2nd gear blew out totally. It could have been coincedence, but just in case, I'm using GL1 only from now on.
Jon Logan shipped the Gl1 with the tranny he rebuilt for me. Don't know if he sells it seperately.

Hey Ron,
I am good and so is my car! Thanks for asking! All my gauges are now working, and I have a brand new top no less!!
You said pure mineral oil... that got me thinking... Do you know I fill my rain lamp, (might be the same vintage as my car come to think of it), with pure mineral oil from Wal-Mart...pharmacy section... Surely it's not the same LOL! But it could be! My tranny was rebuilt by the PO and I am very suspicious if they used the right stuff in it! I am definately gonna change it out next weekend!

Good question. Makes me wonder if mineral oil is mineral oil is mineral oil. Definately not the same vicocity though. Now I have to do some more research to find out about it.

Oh I know it doesn't have additives like ani-foamine etc, and it's prolly not 90 weight either!!
I contacted Pennzoil about their Synchromesh application in a Fiat and here was their response.......

"Dear Clark,

Thank you for your inquiry.

The Synchromesh Manual Transmission fluid is a GL-1 non EP transmission fluid that is used in many GM and Chrysler manual transmissions. However, your vehicle calls for a 90 wt. GL-1 gear oil that is significantly thicker than Synchromesh (20-25 Wt). Therefore, I would not recommend the Synchromesh in this vehicle.

Best Regards,
Technical Service

So this is sraight from the Pennzoil's guy!

Good job Clark! I thought the synchromesh fluid seemed thin. I wonder why they don't put the viscocity on the container. :? You went a step farther than I did with it. I'm glad I gave up on it.

40w motor oil is the same weight as 80/90 gear oil. If you use a synthetic motor oil in 40w in the tranny it will work fine

Well I found the correct tranny oil at NAPA for $10 a gallon so I have extra now at least! If anyone in Tulsa (which I haven't found ANYONE yet...) needs some just hit me up. I drained the tranny and rear end (with the normal stuff) (dang that fill hole is small!!!) and re-filled today! Cross 2 more things off my list! I didn't have any problems before but perhaps the tranny is a bit more quiet now... Oh and it looked NOTHING like the mineral oil I fill up my rain lamp with LOL! Oh and I have a nice sunburn now....

Okay, so we have NAPA here also. But what do I ask for? They have no idea about GL1, and other non-EP oil.

So far, I have picked up two quarts of Redline 70-90 MT (clearly specified for synchros and brass), but it is extremely expensive. Have not put it in yet, and would love to return it.

What specifically is your stuff from NAPA? Price is great compared to the Redline. Buying "the right stuff" from a Fiat vendor online will only end up costing a ton, to get it shipped out here. So it is the Redline or maybe our NAPA stores have the same stuff? Thanks.

I guess another alternative is the 40w engine oil, as per Mark's suggestion.

Mine was marked GL-1 Non EP 90 weight. It came in a white gallon jug, looks like a antifreeze jug. It was in with the rest of the oil. I understand not all NAPA's carry it. I just called to make sure they had it, so you might do the same, it's actually sort of a tractor supply item.

Hey OKLAHOMANEWBIE !

If you have put a non EP oil in your rear axle, get it out fast or you will F * *K your diff REAL QUICK.

Sorry for the language inference, but I dought you could drive 50 miles before you will hear all sorts of horrible noises.
It will not be cheap to fix either. If you have it done, expect to pay 1-2 grand !
