Ramzi, are you implying that we should should not be concerned about the shelf life of rubber components that have been sitting around for years? Are you subjecting that to just guibos or others such as tires hoses and timing belts? I'm not sure what you're getting at.
I have a suspicion he might be referring to a rubber product that is used for something very, very different than in the auto repair business....preventing unexpected procreation comes to mind. Of course, I could be wrong...

I suppose I was also refraining from beating a dead horse. ... And please keep in mind when you (if) you read this... and Im sure that Mark Allison will agree, most of us (vendors) do this because we enjoy it - not because its a fast way to make a buck.

It troubles me greatly when I hear folks suggest that one can buy a 3rd string Lada guibo from a guy selling on Ebay in some breakaway Soviet republic who has no real skin in the game. And for what a $50 part if you buy the most expensive one available? And to read suggestions of using a used part rather than a new item from a reputable supplier is almost irresponsible in my opinion.

Im not trying to start trouble... but really! If we shop by price alone - we deserve what we get! But if my daughter is riding in my car.... trust me Im not going to skimp on a $50 item.

Great comment, Ramzi. I have learned the hard way, both with my Fiat and my boat, that the old "you get what you pay for" adage holds true.

i just said that that if there's a waiting list for a part, used one can be installed with no issues if you know how to inspect it for damage.
i also said, on several ocasions, REPUTABLE SELLERS. you're considered to be one of those, so why do you feel the need to defend?
are you mad because i posted a link for lada guibo for 19euro? delivered to US, that will reach 50bucks easy. by the way that's not MY part, just googled it.


ANY new part that's still in production for 124 spider, is more than likely to actually be a LADA part. apart from balljoints and rear shocks, pretty much all are.
MOST of new guibos i have held in my hands over past 17yrs of my fiddling with fiats and ladas are CRAP. made in italy, made in belgium, made in bulgaria, russia or ukraine. in fact, i'm 90% sure that all western manufacturers outsource production of parts to china, just keeping the brand name. even the bloody boxes are printed there.
i've seen posted recently a link for a NOS guibo in original "fiat ricambi originali" box. blue/white stripe design of the box means that it's from late 80's. no issue there. that is one quality part and unless it's been stored in subtropical conditions i see no problem there.
NEW guibos of good quality i have seen came from all over the world.
AKRON - italy
BA3 - russia
several "no name", even one made from polyurethane, most likely russian aftermarket part
since long time auto auto parts industry is not about top quality, but about top profit.


used guibo? why the hell not? remove all the bolts and bend it in your hands. if there are no cracks or separation of rubber from metal bits - it's as good as new.

and the stories about catastrophic failures that destry the car? bull. if anybody drives their cars to edge of destruction it's over here in eastern europe. i get cars with desintegrating guibos, u joints etc weekly in my workshop. neither of those parts can fail instantly and catastrophically. they all give warnings thousands of kilometers before thay actually fail.

first there's a slight vibration when starting from standstill under load/lots of trottle
than there's vibration every time you start
than there's constant vibration at certain speed - this is when most pople decide to visit a mechanic
than there's bits falling off while driving - last chance to get to mechanic
than there's catstrophic failure damaging the car and/or endangering pasangers.

if you're complete ignoramus that fails to act on any of warning signs, than don't drive at all, otherwise you deserve what you get.

and btw, story about your daughter in the car is just hitting on basic human insticts, not something a reputable seller should revert to in order to sell his goods. that's just low.

Wow all this negativity I started just because my guibo chunked up (which I'm sure is 30 years old lol) come on guys we are all here for one thing OUR PASSION FOR CARS! Not to argue and flame people.. I got the high performance guibo with a lot thanks to Ramzi... I am restoring this car to almost new and would never put used parts like that on it with the exception of a few interior and exterior parts... I'm about to spend thousands and Ramzi has proven to me he deserves my money and some people just need to grow up. Thanks everyone for all my help bit I don't want my post being turned to a hate and anger post so mods please delete

Lately I have noticed chat members getting upset over comments made. I would like to believe we are all here because of our love of cars and willingness to share our experience. This is an international chat room and I really enjoy the fact that our Spiders are so enjoyed all over the world. I think we all need to be aware what is, friendly bantering, in one culture could be offensive to another. Also what is an accepted or necessary maintenance practice in one place is not in another.

An old saying my parents told us: "If my self confidence is right sized what others say is not important."

Well... aside from all this negativity I learned one of the failing signs is shaking from occasional starts... I thought my flywheel was warped or something :lol: Whatever that car is permanently off the road anyway 8)

I installed one of AR's driveline kits in my '74 a month ago, the rubber around the carrier bearing was torn and it was vibrating badly. The peace of mind is worth it to replace guibo, u-joints, and carrier bearing, and I was able to do it all with hand tools and a bench vise.

i didn't say that it can't happen, just that here's plenty warning signs and that one who ignores those signs is an idiot.

yes he should have installed a jet motor
and done away with the drive shaft
it might have been cheeper
