I'm changing my front seal for the second time in two years. I think I may have a bur or something on the crank. But for now I want to know if this thing pictured here at about 11 o'clock is supposed to be here. You can see that the spring from the old seal is hung up around it. Any ideas?

Re: Crankshaft Seal
I don't know what that is......shouldn't be there.
It looks like a roller bearing or something metallic. A broken tooth from a gear? Maybe drain the oil and look for more debris.
Check for fore/aft play in the crankshaft to make sure your thrust bearings haven't gone loose. Years ago, I put these in backwards They wore quickly. Resulted in engine knocking noises and you could see the crank pulley moving fore/aft with the engine running.
The fix was to have the crankshaft welded thicker and re-machined. I believe along with new thrust washers, I re-placed the crankshaft and rod end bearings. Never had any more problems

Re: Crankshaft Seal
Thanks guys, I will pull the carrier off this morning and check the crank for any scaring. I'm curious to know what that is and how it got there.

Steve, you hit the nail on the head. It looks like the tip of a sheet metal screw. I pulled the seal carrier and have a little scaring on the crank. I worked on it some this morning and will complete it all tonight. All but a timing belt. I'll have to call on a Csaba and Ramsi Monday for that.
