Hi,
I am planning to install a late 124 5spd trans but will be using the bellhousing off an early 124 4spd.
I see there is an early and late model front seal for the 124 transmissions which one should I be using?

Re: Front transmission seal
that seal is in the tranny, not the bell housing, so match with the tranny year. Note that 70 bell housings and earlier are smaller than 71 out.

Re: Front transmission seal
The front seal is in a removable steel housing/seal holder that is pressed into the bellhousing. Likely you can change this from one bellhousing to another (it can be easily tapped out), but to be safe get the early seal which fits the early bellhousing/holder.
Here is the complete seal holder with seal:

Re: Front transmission seal
Thanks for the info! I was hoping the carrier was in the bell housing. I happen to have an early seal laying around so great that I can re-use it.
Looks like I have all the parts I need to dig in and rebuild this thing.

Hey - One tip before you proceed. Make sure you take note of how far the seal is pressed into its holder. Its not supposed to pressed all the way in. itll leak if you do that.
