No 4th syncro; transmission tear down
Re: No 4th syncro; transmission tear down
Sorry to revive a relatively old thread but it is the most relevant to me. I'll likely be attempting this soon. I have 4 transmissions in various states. One of them was rebuild by a shop who claimed almost every bearing that can be replaced requires the shafts to be replaced because they don't come apart. I'm seeing lots of disagreement with this statement. I won't be letting them touch my stuff anymore. I plan to disassemble a good transmission that I'll be using to go after the needle bearing between the input and output shafts. The trans has a very faint whine in all gears but 4th. In your opinion, for someone with mechanical aptitude and built his own engine but hasn't torn into a manual trans before, how easy will this be?

Go back a couple of posts and read my tips summary. Definately need a manual and do the teardown in the specified sequential steps.amawds wrote:Sorry to revive a relatively old thread but it is the most relevant to me. That needle bearing is the cheapest bearing in the tranny. I would say buy it rather than take the effort to tear down the other transmission. Be sure to carefully clean and inspect the other bearings, replace if in doubt.

Oh yeah, if I'm going in to repair something I almost always replace with new. This is going into a car with an 8000 dollar paint job, going cheap now would be idiotic.
