My guess would be a bad(bent) shift fork..... but I thought that was more common with 2nd gear than 1st gear?
If the trans has an unkown history, it might be worth a full inspection/rebuild.
A starting point would be to drain the trans fluid and inspect for metal. Drain plug has a magnet on it which collects the ferrous parts from damaged gears, worn syncros will show up as allot of brass colored dust or chips in the oil that was drained.
Do all the other gears shift ok?
