Just removed the starter from my '79. I would like to humbly thank everyone who posted their experiences and advice for doing this, your pain and suffering were not in vain. After a trip to Harbor Freight for some relatively cheap metric swivel sockets, and after reading every post I could find, I was able to get the original starter out in about 30 minutes, with a minimum of cursing. Didn't have to loosen the motormount or trans mounts, the combination of swivel sockets and wobble extensions did the job, even on the accursed top bolt! Next step is to install the new one, but it is a reduction gear starter from AR, so I am optimistic that it will go in without too much drama. Thanks again to all who shared, would have been MUCH harder without all the advice from this forum!

Mine only had one wire that plugged in, it went to the starter solenoid, then there was the large wire from the battery with a ring lug on it and 2 smaller ones with ring lugs that went on the same terminal as the battery wire. Does everything seem to work ok?

Hi....

Im on day 3 of my journey to replace the starter in my 1980 Spider 2000. Im a "New wannabe Mechanic" and am loving every minute working on this beautiful little car.

Ive got the Service Manuals, Artigues Manuals as well as Haye Service Manuals.... all great stuff.... EXCEPT where the 3rd bolt is supposed to be removed (according to the Service Manual).

I found and removed the 2 bolts from the bottom... BUT the only bolt I can find that looks like a likely candidate would need to be removed from the bottom as well....Image

I think it is bolt unnumber top left....

Help!!!!

A little late for some of you but I just did the gear reduction upgrade on my 79 and found this https://www.sears.com/craftsman-3-8-in- ... ckType=G12 was able to get the top bolt easily. I did have the head and intakes off but with a short socket I had it out in minutes from the top.

BTW, I upgraded the jumper from my also new 95 amp alternator to the starter post with an 8ga wire, the old one was kind of crispy near each end carrying just the 55 amps of the old alternator.
