Chrome Alternator

Post by Ptoneill »

I have done a search for chrome alternators, someone posted a link to a GM 60 Amp from Speedway. Has anyone used this alternator? I want the chrome look but I don't want to gave to do a bunch of fabrication to get it to fit. I am mounting the alternator on the lower right side of the block.

Any help, advice, part numbers are greatly appreciated!

I think you would need to sit one the bosh alternators right next to it and take some measurements. What else is chrome under the hood. If the alternator is the only thing chrome then I'm not sure it would really add to the look. But if you cam covers are chrome that might look really sweet.

I have a set of miller mule polished pully's and the majority of the bolt on parts are powder coated red and black. I bought marks electronic ignition module so I moved the alt to the lower position. I am trying to make the motor stand out as a lot of the vehicle has custom pieces. I do have a nice upper alternator bracket powder coated gloss black if anyone is interested for $20 dollars plus shipping.

I have to agree that I will probably have to take it into a large parts store and compare measurements with the parts catalog, I was just hoping someone else had done this and had found a good replacement.

Here are some photos of the lower end of the motor, the head and cams are at the machinists.

The alternator in these pictures is OEM that I painted with high temp paint.

Great idea, did you have to disassemble it? How long did it keep the polished look? And if you don't mind what kind of price am I looking at?

I think a chrome or polished alternator on your motor will look sweet. Looking forward to seeing it all together in the engine bay. Nice work!

It was about ten years ago. My car was at Allisons shop for some work. I think he had taken it apart and sent it down the street. Cant remember the price. But Ive had other stuff polished too.

Conversion to Chevy one wire alternator is well worth the trouble. Simple and adds to the reliability of the electrical system...which in my opinion is weak...

It is also hard to beat the price...as long as it fits in the brackets. I think I will take the oem alternator to NAPA this weekend and sit down with the spec books to compare measurements. I was trying to cheat by seeing if someone had done this already....oh we'll. THANKS for all the input!!

That's where we differ Rob. I don't think the spider needs a different engine. The engine can be built to the point that it over powers the chassis. I drove my 71 for 5 years daily with no Alt issues at all. The x on the other hand needs a better power plant. I know I'm way off track on some of this, but oh well.;

Rob
I think Rob was just referring to the alternator.......although more horsepower is never a bad goal IMHO!! I also like the 2 Ltr, which is why I am dressing it up, after all, looking fast is almost as cool as going fast...and a whole lot cheaper!!

Ptoneil,

I have done it. I think I only had to modify the bracket slightly to make it work..

Spiderrey,
You are correct... I am all about the modifications.. but I'm a hot rodder from way back..we all have our thing. :)

I'm suprised that one of the Suppliers we all know and love, don't offer Chrome or S.S. bolt kits and Chrome engine parts on a exchange program or buy them out right.
Its pretty common in the Motorcycle and Hotrod people.
