Idle Speed Question
Idle Speed Question
I just flushed and replaced the coolant for the summer months. During the process, I had the engine idle through several fan cycles as proscribed. However, after getting the coolant working properly and checking to be sure the thermostat and fan was working properly and there were no leaks, the car would lope at idle and stall. I needed to increase the idle speed using the accelerator stop adjustment screw to get it to run at idle. I have always been unable to get the car to idle at 900rpm (measured at the dash tach, since I don't have a test tach). The car would idle at between 1000 and 1100 but no lower. Now it seems a bit higher than that (1100-1200 I'd guesstimate). Is this a problem? Is it possible the dash tach is off by 200-300 rpms? I went back and did Brad Artigue's FI tune up procedure for setting idle speed but can't get it to idle lower than 1,100 rpm. Any suggestions? Can I leave it that way? Thanks.

Re: Idle Speed Question
I followed Brads F.I. tuneup also.I drove my car with the idle @1100-1200 rpm, with no ill affects, for the first 6 months. After the F.I. tune I adjusted it to the reccomended 850 rpm and it was rough. I found my best idle @ 950-1000 and thats where I left it.I think all cars have a happy spot and as long as its not way out its probably ok.It does seem if you followed step by step you should be able to make it idle lower.Did you go to the idle adjust screw after you set the accel. stop adjustment?

Re: Idle Speed Question
if you adjust the idle speed using the stop screw, expect a lope. The stop screw is only to set the throttle closed position so that it doesn't get stuck shut on engine cooldown. The idle speed should be set with the air bypass screw
Re: Idle Speed Question
If I try to adjust the idle as described by Brad (ie. seat air bypass screw all the way in) and then adjust to 800-900 with idle stop screw, I cannot get the car to stay running in order to go to the next step, which is to back the air bypass screw out until 850-900 rpm is achieved. I need to have the idle higher in the first step to get the car to continue running long enough so I can adjust the air bypass screw. But then, since it starts all the way in, any adjustments to open it makes the car idle even faster!!! Am I missing something??
