Hard Pedals

Post by Leesfer »

I'm not sure how to explain it but on my cousins '78, his pedals are kind of stiff when you step on them and don't have much travel compared to my 82... is this normal between years or is there problems that cause stiff pedals?

Hard pedals? Sounds like Viagra in the gas tank!

Ya know its really hard to compare cars that are so old. So many brake parts that are at different stages of wear. A soft pedal could be some air in the system. Start at the longest or farthest brake and bleed first and work your way to the shortest, which would be the drivers front.
A lot of people just bleed a little on a brake fluid on a job and thats it. Brake fluid is cheap. Use a whole can on a job. Put a plastic hose on the bleeder screw, put the other end in a jar with some brake fluid in it so it cant suck air back in. Open it up and pump away. Fill the reservoir often. Then to the next brake and so on. Pump the most on the longer ones though.

Is it possible that there is no free play in the clutch, and the cable needs adjusting?

Check the vacuum hose to the brake booster. If it's cracked or leaking it will cause a hard pedal.
