trunk integrity

Post by baltobernie »

Are Spider trunks reasonably weather-tight?

My '73 suffered some minor rear-end damage in her past, and when I got the car, the trunk was heavily soiled. Lid gasket OK. One obvious leak was around the tail lamps; the gasket didn't fill the void between housing and body. The fuel tank was dented and didn't fit too well; fixed that. But there are other areas where I can "see the light"

There's only one hole plug present. Should the other openings in the trunk be sealed? (there was a bird's nest in the one above) How about the wells on either side? Factory drain holes, added by you, or none?

I just pulled everything out of my trunk just for you. I've got the same unsealed holes in mine.

One thing I learned early in life was never to talk to a woman about "junk in the trunk".

Thanks for looking! I'll work on sealing the perimeter, and not bother with the openings in question.

75 minutes total at DMV today for tags and registration. eBay printout for a Bill of Sale, no safety or emission inspections, $173 total for two years. And the clerk said, "Cute car!" Eat your heart out, Californians!

Bernie,

Great video by the way! loved your wife's gleeful comment about her amazement at you actually building a car....

if you are in doubt about any of those openings leading directly to the outside world and therefore letting moisture in, try this:

after dark, shut all the lights in the garage off and close the door to eliminate the moon/neighbors/etc. place your biggest source of bright light under the trunk.... stick your nose right up to each of those holes you are concerned about, and the 90 degree transition spots and look as carefully as you can with your head and shoulders in the trunk for light shining thru from below.

i believe you will find that those spots are of no issue to you at all. Increasing your wife's confidence in your abilities should be your biggest concern.... way to go, by the way.

It actually was a good thing. I found a jacket I'd been missing since fall. :P

if you listen careful, pope.... she clearly did not believe he was gonna make it back under his own steam, and she was prolly thinking of standing by with the rescue vehicle.

Somebody needed to hold the camera, you never know when an AFV moment might happen... the $10,000.00 prize can go on the restoration bill.

For ppl in other parts of the world... AFV = America's Funniest Videos.
