That is great reading, very well said..
The fellow from the NRA saying the government should put an armed guard in every school in america is really baffling to me and quite frankly embarassing if it does comes to that. Id like to think most of the population would be thinking something similar.
Too bad about Davos today eh...

I've been to Davos, that's where my 1990 E30 M3 Cabrio came from. I am a real hockey fan, but I just can't get into the Spengler cup. There doesn't seem to be any allegiance with the players to any one country. However, the World Juniors...now that is a competition that is a sort-of replacement for the NHL.
Switzerland and Sweden are both in the top 10 in the world as far as best standard of living as determined by the United Nations Development Programme (UNDP). Of course this is bound to change now as a result of so many countries having economic woes.

Please don't misjudge my comments as pejorative. I love Europe, the people, food, geography, all of it, and whatever works for you is fine with me. Socialism, in the context that I use it, is merely the use of power by any central authority (typically a federal system of government) to enforce social/cultural change upon a population, in a manner that is viewed by that authority as "good". Thus we have people like Mayor Bloomberg in NYC banning 16oz+ soda bottles and certain transfats (but not those great steaks in the top restaurants they like to eat in!). We have cupcakes banned in public schools, where nurses are not allowed to give out an aspirin, but they give out condoms and will arrange student abortions without knowledge of the parents in many cases. In its essense people like Obama and Bloomberg, etc are Utopians, and All Utopianism by its very nature is dependent upon the tyrannical use of authority by said central power to contort the will of the individual towards acceptance of the thinking of the "good". The Nazi's were classic Utopians, to the extreme of course, in all regards. They were hard Utopians, today we face soft Utopians. They sell the idea with handouts and promises. Myself, I really like the idea of the American Constitutional Republic, (we are NOT a Democracy) with Constitutionally protected individual rights, the concept of elevation of the individual right above the power of the state, and hope that we can keep this great American experiment going for at least another generation, but I have to admit I fear that we may have already lost. Time will tell.

Internal household rivalry dictates that I am allowed to cheer for Canada.
The Spengler Cup should be appreciated simply for what it has always been - a series of friendly matches over Christmas, with HC Davos inviting other teams from different national leagues. Winning it means nothing much.
