Post by So Cal Mark »

Save the date, Sunday November 25th in the Inland Empire. The 5th annual Turkey Trot consists of a morning meet and greet, a canyon drive up Mt Baldy, over the famous Ridge Route to legendary Glendora Mountain Rd. More details will be posted in the next week.

I did this drive today to make sure all of the roads are open. What a great drive! This has to be one of So Cal's best drives.
Perfect, clear weather. I could see downtown LA from the top of the ridge.
Who'se going to attend?

We met at the Starbucks in La Verne ... 3 Spiders and 5 new 500s. Took off at about 10 AM for Mt. Baldy Road.
This is pretty much the route we followed.

When we got to the place where Glendora Ridge Road splits to the left (Point A), we continued up Mt. Baldy Road to the ski lift area. Pay particular attention to the road in the map below between the arrows ...
Image
...twisty enough for you? We stopped at the top to catch our collective breath and let the cars cool down ... about 6600 feet elevation. Here's the Spider contingent.
Image
We then went back down to Glendora Ridge Road and headed west ...
Image
Beautiful scenery, but the road is very narrow with lots of oncoming motorcycles.

Right after I took these pics, I hit a rock in the road about the size of a bowling ball ... it got the front sway bar and broke the attachment tab for the end bracket off the A-arm, scraped the trans, mashed the transmission support and bent the bolt, scraped the resonator and took a chunk out of my rear sway bar. I think it was shale so I pulverized it a bit as it went towards the rear after the initial hit. Lucky it was off-center or my oil pan would have been toast. Reattaching the bracket was a pretty easy fix compared to what could have happened.

Several times, the 500s had to stop and wait for our Spiders to catch up to them. They handled the twisties a lot better than the older cars. I think I was in 2nd and 3rd for the last 5 or so miles. We finished up at the Legends Classic Diner in Glendora for lunch. All in all, a great morning ride!

I also wish I could have made it, another Spider would nave been nice.
However, my day wan't wasted, I was able to help another new Spider owner solve a lot of bugs on the 79 he just got and is really doing a lot of work to, getting it back on the road after 14 years sitting out in the desert. He says the sand was almost up to the window on the passenger side. He's already redone the whole interior, beautifully. When we took it out for it's first test drive the sand was still pouring out of the dash. But, no rust!

It will be nice when all the earthquakes bring Los Angeles closer to Sacramento...I'll finally be able to join you because the drive won't be so far!
