Front brakes RESOLVED Need help with rear calipers RESOLVED
So I thought I would replace the pads & rotors yesterday. Read up on all the info/videos I could, got all my parts & tools, and off I went. I kept hearing how bad/hard it was to get the rotors/calipers off etc however, mine came off without any issues Then I put them all back together and now the wheel will not turn (freely by hand). I looked down and found these

Re: Help with brakes, please
those are spring clips for the brake pads they would have been on the top or the bottom of the pads themselves.... when i did mine they were in place of number 10 on your diagram.... anti rattle clips i have heard them called also... i ended up going back to them as i did not like the spring clip that came with the new pads.... do not think the absence of them would make the wheel not spin freely.... others smarter than myself hopefully will chime in

Re: Help with brakes, please
it is my understanding that the only modification Fiat made to the braking system was to replace the large pad springs (#10 in the illustration) with the smaller spring clip (one per pad). I have these smaller clips on all my brakes (front and rear). No problems .... yet

Re: Help with brakes, please
did you forget a spacer??? ... my wheels are not original and they all had a spacer between the rotor and the wheel...forgetting one of those would make the wheel rub.... did it rub before the work just done?4uall wrote:sooooooo looks like the inner part of my right rim is rubbing the upper control arm?!? Re: Help with brakes, please
I actually took it off to double check
IMG_1031 by itzebtze, on Flickr
I do not believe it was rubbing before because I never heard anything, nor was there any marks on the inside rim or upper control arm

Re: Help with brakes, please
are those locating studs????? .... maybe the wheel is hitting them and not turning true.... if you spin the wheel does it have a wobble or does it spin true.... is it allways hitting the control arm or just at full turn of the steering wheel

Re: Help with brakes, please
also maybe the rim and control arm used to hit and now it is another problem...... the 2 bolts that hold on the caliper bracket should have a washer.... if by chance the washer was ommited by mistake the bolt, because it is now longer, will make contact with the back of the rotor... ask me how i know

Re: Help with brakes, please
yes they are, they actually fit inside the rim without issue, no wobble yet it will only turn 3/4 around then sticks (when turned all the way to the left), only happens when wheel is turned all the way to the left81SPIDERMATT wrote:are those locating studs????? .... maybe the wheel is hitting them and not turning true.... if you spin the wheel does it have a wobble or does it spin true.... is it allways hitting the control arm or just at full turn of the steering wheel

Re: Help with brakes, please
ok ... next question... is it doing it only on the jack stands... or while on the road.... with the car off the stands the geometry of everything changes.... doesnt it ???? kinda grasping now at straws.... gonna jack mine up tomorrow and see if i can see something that might help.... maybe there is a stop adjustment of some type that will shorten the turn radius and solve the problem.... could it be out of alignment to the point of rubbing.... toe in or out issue.... how is the wear on the tire tread.... does anything in the steering feel different lately or loose...... racking my limited brain...

Re: Help with brakes, please
Just a thought, how are the brake hoses? If you turn it to the left does the hose crimp and possibly hold pressure against the pad, or are we talking about rotating the tire to the left?

Re: Help with brakes, please
let's see if I understand correctly what you are describing here: with the car jacked-up, and the wheel at full droop (spring extended) the wheel will spin. But when you turn the wheel to the left (I assume to full-lock?) you can only spin the wheel 3/4 of a turn, and then it sticks.4uall wrote: , no wobble yet it will only turn 3/4 around then sticks (when turned all the way to the left), only happens when wheel is turned all the way to the left
Did I get this correct?
if so, I;d suggest a minor test: turn the wheel to full-lock the other direction, and go spin the other wheel.
When the wheel is hanging, and the A-arms are pointed down, the upper arm is much closer to contacting the wheel, and that is even more true as you turn the (front of) wheel towards the center of the car. Minor contact is probably not too big a concern, because when you lower weight of the car, it'll all go away.
I am more concerned that it doesn't touch everywhere, only at "3/4 turn". I would expect this to be at the same location on the wheel each rotation? in which case, you've got a bent wheel, or it is improperly centered on the hub, or something.
I'm no Boy-Racer..... but if I can't take every on-ramp at TWICE the posted limit.... I'm a total failure!

Re: Help with brakes, please
took both off then re-installed both rotors and brakes again. No issues with the knocking while turning however, minor knocking while driving. I noticed I have two types of Brake Pad Spring Should I only have the first set on my 1980?

Re: Help with brakes, please
one or the other... not both.... i like the first ones better myself..(smaller ones)... one spring per pad so 4 will do both sides of one axle....
