How do I access the ECU?

Post by sjwcougs »

I started going through and testing the fuel injection system. I want to gain access to the ECU in order to check for resistance of the temp. sending unit. I crawled under the dash to look for this elusive beast and don't see anything that resembles the images I have which allow me to check things with my multimeter. Help?

Thanks,

That beast is under the glove compartment and is 6.5 x 6.5 x 1.5 and usually black in color. It has a 35 pin connector on it.
Have fun

I crawled under the glove box and did not see anything that resembles this. Do I have to unscrew anything to get to it?

There is a bracket that holds it on that is about 6 inches off the firewall and about the same from the right passanger side. The unit should have a metallic green Bosch sticker on the bottom side, as you look up at it. Its the box you keep bumping your nose on.

I don't know what is going on underneath there, but definitely no Bosch sticker. There has been some fancy zip tie work done as well. After the brackets come off does this just drop down and give you access to the ECU? Do you need to disconnect anything? I don't know why this is so hard. I think there has been some work down underneath there before. Is it around the heater core? The heater has been routed around the heater core (ie NO HEAT). Would that change the way things look underneath the glove box?

this is what the box should look like. The fact that you cant find it means something might have been done, as in an aftermarket F.I. System, or it was moved. Did you check behind the center counsel where the radio is? Also check under the passenger seat.

Well, this is what it looks like, time to do more exploration. Stock, it is out in the open and easily viewed. The fact that your car has zip ties may mean it was moved. Good luck

Ok I found it and it definitely seems to be rigged up there kind of strange, but it's there. So when testing you just disconnect the harness and use multimiter on the various numbered plugs as described in the manual? Will the car run with this disconnected? I'm trying to check the temp sensor. My gas mileage is horrible and have started going through tune up section. Thermo time switch and cold start injector are next on the list of things to check.

My suggestion is to not touch the ECU at this time. If you ever try to disconnect it, I would remove the battery cables first.
I think that you should work your way up to the ECU first.
How does the car ride? Is the engine working properly? Sputtering, hesitant? What is horrible gas milage? What are you getting in gas milage anyways?
Have you done all the other thigs first? Plugs and is the gap correct, wires, Lambda sensor, clean the injectors, air filter, gas filter? Hows the timing on the car?
I would test the individual FI parts first for resistance. Also make sure the ground wires on the sides of the engine compartment are clean and not corroded.

Gas Mileage is about 20.

The car runs very well. Fires up. Runs strong. I adjusted the throttle position sensor and this fixed the sputtering upon decelleration. Exhaust smells very rich and my clothes smell of exaust if I warm the car up in the garage with the door open. I have a feeling there is an issue with the thermo time switch or the cold start injector. Last fall I started her up and let her warm for awhile. I came down to the garage and there was fuel dripping from the hose to the cold start injector. tightened the clamp on the hose and that fixed the drip, but not the problem. Plugs were new last year, new O2 sensor, timing was checked by a mechanic (don't know if that means anything). Because the car runs so well and the exhaust smell is so strong I have feeling it has to be a component of the FI system. And the reason I wanted to open the ECU was to check the ohms on the temp sensor throughout the range to make sure it is functioning properly.
