Shipping a Fiat

Post by GeorgiaGirl »

Anyone have any recommendations (or warnings) on which company would be the best to contact regarding shipping of a Fiat? Would be traveling approximately 700 miles. Any help would be appreciated.

Thanks,

Last auto shipper I used was DAS. In short my car arrived dirty even though it was shipped enclosed and was more than 2 weeks late. The previous owner had taken pictures of it when it was picked up and sent the pictures to me so I could see what condition the car was in when it was turned over to DAS. The only "new" damage the car had was that DAS had scraped up a wheel. With the frustration of the car being late, dirty, and with "new" damage (their claim process is easy, they just don't pay) I would NOT recommend them.

For a 700 mile trip you could make a long weekend out of it and fetch it yourself with a rental truck + flatbed trailer (I don't recommend a car dolly). At least that way the car will be in YOUR possession and you will have control over how it is being shipped and cared for during transit.

I recommend making sure your new car is on your insurance policy before you pick it up. Same is true even if a shipper says that they have insurance to cover a loss. It will be you against THEIR insurance company if you need to file a claim.

This site is a bit cumbersome but it may help you find a shipper if you go that route: http://www.transportreviews.com/

Best of luck!

I can say this. Get your price in writing before hand. I had a company that tried to change the price after picking it up . Luckly I had it in writing and I have a friend that is a lawer that made a phone call for me. Use someone well known not just the best price.

Where are you in Ga? I sold a X1/9 last year, and the buyer arranged shipping to Ft Lauderdale with a local broker.Other than turning around on my steep narrow mountain road,it went very smooth. If it was mine,I would fly to the car and rent the u-haul and trailer.Probably cheaper than shipping it and you have the car.

Thanks everyone for all of the great advice! After reading it all, I believe I will go to pick up the car myself. Seems like I'd feel a lot more at ease if I did it that way. I have and F-150 Supercab so it will haul pretty much anything.

@SunnySideUp: Thanks for the help. You're experience made me rethink what I was doing and decide to just go pick up a car if it's only a few hundred miles away.

@Ga.spyder: I live in Cumming, GA. I've been looking for a Fiat for a while and I've almost closed the deal on one. Have to wait for final word regarding my latest offer.

@BEEK: I'm not actually going from GA to FL, but from the midwest to GA. Thanks for the offer though. It is much appreciated.

Take care and if I get my car anytime soon, I'll post some pics.

Good decision. Puts you in greater control, costs a lot less, and those U-Haul car trailers are a snap to use. I did the same thing when I bought mine, but it was only about 100 miles away. I think the trailer was like $55 bucks a day or something like that.

Beek,do you ever come up as far north as Blairsville or even Gainesville? If so,let me know and I will buy you lunch. Its the least I can do for all the help you have given us on the Lemons car.
Lisha, let us know when you have the car.We have some pretty big Fiat events coming up this year, all within driving distance of Cumming. When you are ready to wring it out in the mountains,I and maybe some others here, could meet up in Dahlonega.I have a F-150 Supercrew and tow my Fiat pretty often.Check your mirrors frequently...just to make sure its still there.
