Re: floor padding
Of course, with the top up at road speed, most noise comes from oscillation of the top material. But with the top down, a wind screen/deflector like this will help a lot to cut down on wind noise. For example, it will be much easier to have a conversation and/or hear speech from your GPS. It will also take out almost all of the silly-sounding "Doppler effect" that, at road speed, can sometimes make your Stereo sound like "Alvin and the Chipmunks" and lets you play it at about half the volume:RRoller123 wrote:I think low frequencies (rumbles, etc) come through the floor and sides and are fatiguing. Certainly hard to minimize the high frequencies through the top/open area.
You can see the parts list and scroll through picture steps for making one at this link:

Quite, which is why I did't go nuts with sound equipment, but I want to hear the induction and the exhaust notes; the rest, as RRoller notes, can be fatiguing.
Thanks,

Re: floor padding
How effective is that wind screen noise deflector? Looks like a very clever solution!

My feelings as well - until we drove it 700 miles in three days!opus10583 wrote:Hi Adam,Adam wrote:Isn't noise blocking in a convertible an oxymoron? The car is quieter with the new insulation and carpet... but it's no lexus.

Thanks for the kind words.RRoller123 wrote:How effective is that wind screen noise deflector? Looks like a very clever solution!
Frankly, we were amazed - the wind noise was virtually gone. I got the Idea from another spider owner who made separate deflectors - one to fit on each seat headrest - using both posts. But when I started to build it, I soon saw that a one-unit solution was much easier and less expensive to fab, and plenty sturdy. The caution is that it will limit having one seat very far forward and the other all the way back. there is only about 1/4" play (1/8" in each "T", so you need to design it with your seats set the way you will use them most of the time (so, your passenger can't tilt their seat back and take a nap! ). The top of mine is about 1" higher than the windshield, and I think the slight vertical angle you see in the photo also helps reduce vibration. You can't put the top up with it installed, but it stores upside down in the back seat, taking up little room. Haven't caught any bugs in it yet!

Re: floor padding
I found the road noise, low frequencies, and heat from the tranny tunnel reduced quite a bit with the new insulation... it also helps hear the stereo when not listening to the induction and exhaust. As for wind noise, I have one of Brady's windscreens and it works great! I did modify the windscreen so that I can flip it down... my drive to work is on the edge of a provincial park unless it is a chilly morning, I want the wind in my hair.
Jay, send me an email to my Harley-Davidson account and I'll shoot you my new address. Got the itch to tinker and my car is not accessible over the winter.

Re: floor padding
I just received in the mail a sample of the EZ Cool (Kudos! They were very good to send it right away) and I was thinking that maybe this material could be used on the door panel, either between the vinyl and the fibreboard, or sandwiched between the fibreboard and door framework when th epanel goes on. Has anyone tried this sort of thing with their doors?

Re: floor padding
Careful with putting anything on the doors. If its too thick, the window handle will not be able to be pushed on far enough to clip. I used 1/4 wood to rebuild my panels and now am stuck trying to figure a solution. Not sure how thick the ezcool is, but measure carefully.

Re: floor padding
Agreed. Also, having had door panels apart several times to repair/replace upholstery or adjust power windows, my guess is that you would get more noise control from gluing multiple "puzzle pieces" of material to the inner surface of the OUTER door body panel. IMHO, upholstery material and composition board on the inside panel already provides some sound deadening for the inside panel. You would need to make sure the metal was clean and the treatment material was well adhered so it would not come loose and possibly mess up the window mechanism.Divers wrote:Careful with putting anything on the doors. Re: floor padding
Wouldn't an noisy barrier like dynamat work well on the door panels, as it is paper thin? The ez cool is about a 1/4 of an inch thick so it might cause problems with the handles.
Jay, did you hi ahead with your order, I have a left over piece I can drop off if you want to see a sample.
