Spare Tire Mount

Post by RDSPYDR »

I was working in the trunk getting ready to redo the fuel lines and replace the wood, when I noticed that my spare tire isn't held in place. Underneath was what looks to be a large washer, and what appears to be a long threaded wingnut. How did Fiat secure the spare tire ?

I was thinking of either welding a nut to the trunk bottom or drilling a whole and double nuttting a threaded rod with fender washers for support.

the nut is mounted in the floor
the spare goes in face up
the winged bolt with washer goes in straight down
when you do everything correct people arent sure youve done anything at all (futurama)

rdspydr, heres a pic of the raised nut mounted to the bottom of my trunk that the washer/wing nut think screws into.

Just noticed the year of your car.
Someone should chime in here soon that has one of the newer(than mine) cars about how it is in their trunk, seems like I've heard it mentioned before that the Spider 2000 has some differances in the trunk & don't have that.

I have a 81 & 82 and the tire justs sets in the hole. I don't think there was anything to hold it in place from the factory.

My '82 doesn't have any provisions for mounting.

As the yearswent on Fiat/Pininfarina left some items out to shave down the costs. First the oil pressure gauge and the air horns, later the spare tire hold down...
I believe on the '83-85 Pinins the hold down returned, but it was a different kind.

Yep, mine doesn't have a mount either. 81FI. I got tired of hearing it move around so I have some closed cell foam blocks wedged in there. Thought about riveting something in there like the earlier models have to secure it.
