Non-Working Tachometer
Non-Working Tachometer
As some of you might remember my car has a dual point dizzy in it. Essentially, my entire ignition system is about 5 years retro to the age of the car (1980).
My tach does not work. I traced the wires around and it seems that the wire to the negative side of the coil does have continuity like it should to the tach.
SO, does the tach for the electronic ignition system draw it's signal from the negative side of the coil? Parhaps the electronic ignition system uses a different tach then the older systems. I know It's just wishful thinking that I can get this tach to work. Perhaps I am in need of a new tach.
I've been making do without, but geesh it would be nice to tune the car if I actually knew what my rpms were!

Re: Non-Working Tachometer
OK, I needed a handful of parts and was able to get a fellow Chi-FLU member to yank them all off of his 1980 parts cars. My tach was plug-play. Worked right away! BUT, i need some data for these numbers I'm seeing. I'm idling at 1500rpm, and as I've never had a Tach with this car I just am shocked to see the RPMS related to the sounds my engine makes. I always thought I was good at estimating, and felt that when i drove it hard I would have been coming VERY close to redline at some of my shifts. Today, i plugged in the new tach and took off, If I shifted by sound (even driving hard) it's around 4000rpm. I don't want to bust my engine, so could someone give me some estimates of their RPMS at various speeds? i know the gear ratios and could probably type them into a calculator to get estimated speeds, but why do that when I can ask here!?!?!?!
Also, Denise, if you are reading this: I know we emailed a few months ago about your spare tach, but when i could get one thrown in a box with other parts I figured you'd be understanding about it. if you absolutely need to get rid of it and had planned on the sale, then I won't back out. I'd rather see it go to someone who needs it though, just let me know.

Re: Non-Working Tachometer
Don't worry about it Daniel. I'll take it off my desk and put it in my parts bin.
BTW, that Fiat ought to be able to rev to redline easy.
