I have the motor pretty much apart and it appears to me that it has recently been rebuilt as the head and cam, and oil pan gaskets look new.
However I found a surprise in the oil pan (see picture). It is from the shaft that drives the oil pump. My first question is why would it shear off or break and what is it for. Balancer, stabilizer? Also could this be the reason I cannot get the damn thing to run properly and lastly where do I find this part. I have looked at IAP and rock auto but don't honestly know what to call it.
Thanks Mark

Revised "rebuild or not"
if the aux shaft is broken, the likely scenario is that it was out of time and the crankshaft counterweight hit it. This can often result in a huge hole in the block, so you're quite fortunate if only the shaft broke. Many people cut the shaft off and plug the end if they're using FI since the end of the shaft is only for the fuel pump lobe.
confused
Mark,
I am confused by your reply. On non fuel injected cars is the fuel pump within the block? I do not see where it would mount externaly to be driven by the shaft or how the counter weight can hit. What am I plugging? Just to clarify, the shaft that I am talking about has gears on it which drives the oil pump. Sorry to be dumb on this one but I am just not that versed on fiat engines.
thanks again

Mark,
I am going to drive you nuts on this one but I am not understanding (a) what and or why to plug the end of the shaft. In removing the oil pump I don't see how the shaft can affect oil pres. I am not by any means trying to second guess you I am trying to learn and understand so please do not take offense to my questions. Above is a link to a second picture of what I am talking about. I do not see on my previous post that the first one showed up so if you feel so inclined both are hosted at imageshack.com and my login info follows. username: m3810 password: Ls2ijPs.
