Rear end
Rear end
A couple question. First, car is and 81 with 110,000 miles. What should I or how do I tell what things need to be changed? Wheels turn smoothly....there is some give when I yank on the rotors...no rocking edge to edge. Should I replace the bearing "just because". NONE of the ebrake cabling/hardware is there...so that will be a challenge. Rear calipers being replaced. Will be bypassing the compensator with Marks bypass hose. Shocks are being replaced with kyb's. What else?
Re: Rear end
What bearing are you talking about? Do you mean piston? If you mean piston, you have to take it out to see if there is any pitting. It will be an easy job with the e-brake cable off already. Do you have a book? It shows how everything is suppose to be in the manual.
Re: Rear end
If your wheel bearings sound good and there is no leaks. Don't fix something that isn't broke. Put the money else where.
The bearings have to be pressed on at the shop.

Re: Rear end
There is no cabling installed. I have the shop manual and I have a new cable ordered. Actually considering not installing an ebrake . just kidding!
Re: Rear end
I can't find my cable. I just installed the brake handle today. All I need is to find my cable. I hate when you buy stuff and put it somewhere, then can't find it. I can take pic's for you if you like once I find it. Hopefully
Re: Rear end
I think the reason it's not in the box with the rest of the stuff is because it was too long to fit. I have one more box to look in. If it's not there I might just pull out the rest of my hair.

Yes, yes! pull out all your hair so you will look like me! That certainly will help you find the cable that is "right where you left it and the last place you look for it". At this point you know where it is not!

Re: Rear end
I'm about to give up looking for it. It's only $20 for a new one. As soon as I buy the new one, it will turn up.
Re: Rear end
So..just because I like trouble I decided to remove the passenger side axle! Since I have never done this before...anything special I should look for? Should I just replace the bearings because the car has 110k miles. Looking into where the axle goes, I see some liquid...is this normal.....I assume it is differntial fluid.
Re: Rear end
Well...since no one is helping
Now that I have them removed, they look good....can I just bolt the axle back in without changing the seals or are they shot when you take pressure off them?????????????????????????
Someone throw me a bone....they don't cover this stuff in the manual!

Re: Rear end
Just be careful when you put it back together. Put the axle in and around the bearing edge toward you put the o-ring. When you gently slide the axle in the o-ring will fall into it's spot. Otherwise you will crush the o-ring. Everything will be alright. Nothing will need replace just by looking. I don't know if there is a mileage time period to change the bearings. If your like me, since you have it apart, you my as well replace them. I had Napa do mine $20 a side. Change the seals and o-rings too.
