On the left side of the engine I found this:

Anyone know what engine this is?

I must have been blind when I bought a used engine. What I thought I was buying was a 1608 engine, but now I realize that its probably not. This engine has the distributor at front left (looking from the drivers seat). Its marked "26319" and "V6" right over "S6" between the spark plugs. Otherwise I have not seen any other markings (where should I look?). Apart from the distributor placing it looks pretty much like the engine (1608) in my car. The only thing Im sure of is that its at least a FIAT engine, and it was cheap, so Im not very upset about it (apart from that I still dont have a running car ).
Can anyone give me a hint as to what kind of engine this really is?

The actual engine ID is on the block, not the head. Early 1608's had a block mount distributor, and all of the 1438's had block mounts. So you might have an early 1608.
If it's a 1438 and you don't want it let me know, I can use a spare.

ive never heard of or seen a 1608 with a block mounted dist from the factory. first year for the 1608 was 71, if i remember correctly. i had a 71 with a 1608, dist was in the head, . also bought a 70 from the original owener. the dist was on the block. is there a book on these cars that shows something different? Lancias had larger motors with the dist in the block, but they have different motor mounts.

Block distributors
You may be right, but I have a drake manual with 1608's and block mount distributors and a transition period to the camshaft mount. No reason why it wouldn't work, the provision is there you just need the right manifold with the offset (for the iDFs) or the DHSA manifold with the inset.

whats a drake manuel, is it european. i agree , its possible to put a block mounted dist on any 124 series engine. i considered it on my 2 liter before i decided to go with a crank fired ignition instead. i actully have a manifold that is designed for a block mounted dist, on my 2 liter rt now. it holds my weber 40 idf,s. hoping to replace this whole system soon

Drake was an old shop manual publisher. They took the original shop manual pictures and paraphrased the text - poorly. They are hard to follow and reference every FIAT special tool (despite saying the book was for the home mechanic). It was a UK publication (but a new york publisher, get that), so who knows - they didn't even sell the cars in the UK.
Haynes has the 1608 as the only motor with the camshaft mount, and the 1438/1592/1756 as block mount, which is just wrong.
So hey, who knows? But the block mounts worked on all of the engines provided you could squeeze them in there. I tried a plex block mount on my 2l years ago and it was just too tight to use (I had the offset DCNF manifold at the time).
