Broken radiator filler neck, repairable?

Post by Rascal »

A piece broke off of the lip on the radiator filler neck.
Can the filler neck be replaced by a radiator shop, or do I need a new radiator?

Assuming it's brass, that's an easy job that any competent rad shop can do quickly. Get a new cap while you're at it.

And if it can't be fixed, take a look at the alum. rad Mark Allison sells. It's a pretty good deal, I think.

Same thing happened to me. I decided to upgrade to mark's aluminum radiator. Put it in yesterday, and it's working really well. It has a huge capacity, over 2 gallons. Overall I'm very pleased.

I'm going to install Mark's rad as well. Only thing is that right now I'm on Vancouver Island and the rad is at a friend's place in Pt Roberts Wash. Just waiting to connect the dots.
Derek - how did the installation go? Any difficulties?

Mark was a big help on the install. I had to call and ask some questions, but I eventually figured it out. The the top of the radiator is 1.5" above the top support. Measure and drill holes in the top brackets so it will sit at that height. Then place the lower brackets on the lower radiator support, and measure and drill the lower support holes. Once all the holes are drilled its fairly simple. I assumed the threaded bungs were metric, but were not. I resorted to taking the radiator into the hardware store to get the correct stainless bolts. When I get a mig welder I will weld in supports, so they cannot be seen from the top, but until then they are fine.

A local radiator shop was able to install a new filler neck for $5 parts and $35 min. shop fee.
They did a flow and pressure check, cleaned and painted it up nicely.
They recommended using a 7 lb. cap instead of the 13 lb. one the auto parts store wanted to sell me.
