I use a pair of vise grips as well over the flare nut, keeps it's shape, usually works

Get a pair of v-groove vice grip pliers. I haven't met a flare nut it couldn't conquer, no matter how old and crusty, even if they have been rounded off before. One of my favorite tools.

I would think that Vise-Grips would distort the nut, rendering it useless. But if you were planning on replacing the brake hose anyway ...

While we're on the subject, does anybody use anti-seize on the bleeder screws?

No you mis understand. I put the vise grips on the outside of the flare wrench fairly lightly. It keeps the flare wrench from distorting and bending and rounding off the nut.

Problem with our brake lines is that the coating on the line corrodes and freezes the nut on the line... do not ask me how I know.

Good quality flare nut wrench, if the lines are in good condition, should do the trick.

I like the idea of the vise grips on the outside of the flare wrench, but it must be a pita in some of the tight spaces...

Folks, Kevin1 is right. The vicegrip tool works BETTER than even a quality flarenut wrench. terry

I might be ordering one of those, especially after the trouble I went through removing the lines on my X19. My Craftsman tools were just plain disappointing and there just isn't any room to add vice grips in the mix.
Does anyone have a set of Snap-Ons they can report on? Do they spread out and lose their grip or are they worth the extra money?

Like many, the brake fittings have been a source of frustration till I bought a flared wrench. I combine the wrench with fire if the thing does not break loose with some effort. I use that meps gas, seems a bit hotter than the usual blue bottle stuff. So far so good.

My snap-on tubing wrenches are wonderful, worth every cent.
Heat, penetrating oil, then tap on line, and nut. Keep it up. can't remember the last time I had a line I couldn't get undone easily.
Vise Grips just distort the crap out of everything and basicly pinch the nut onto the line. Last resort.

Like many of us I have also ruined the flare nuts using vise grips. I'm always a little leary of applying heat to losen up the nut. I have two set s of flare nut wrenches. One is worthless and you can not apply much force without the wrench opening. It was a cheap set that I picked up at Autozone to get a job done in a hurry. Obviously a poor choice on my part. The second set is snap on. They work well and have a wider putting more metal around the nut to eliminate/reduce the destortion of the nut as well as not altering the wrench. The nuts are a softer metal and therefore are prone to distort quickly. The 6 piece metric Snap on set was a purchased used for $45 from my neighbor. I have seen the same set with various prices and that set is always north of $150. Ray
