Well its done, A great deal (I hope) Went to drive the '78 124, The Good In the hills around Portland OR it pulled great the clutch held on uphill starts and all mechanical levers and catches worked well...The bad NO 3rd gear (SO it is a true 124..as in shift pattern, oh and 5th as well) Some electrical but sounds and feels like fuses or switches and the brakes are really low to the floor...the Deal US$1700 on for sale sign...$1500 on internet I did buy it for $1160 and could not be happier!!! Bled the brakes, I think, but still soft pedal...How do I check the Master cylinder?

The Brakes are Truely Bled and Working Great, I can't say how great it feels to be able to stop on command. I just now fear this Fiat will be an ongoing rollercoaster of emotions....oh well, I really enjoy it so far

Welcome to the forum! Great deal reminds me of my black 78 I got for about the same amount! The brakes on these, (the way I understand it from this forum and my own car) are adequate, but the pedal never gets really firm like all of us are use to on other cars. I have replaced all the brake hoses, master, two rear calipers, removed the compensator and bled and bled, stops great but still no firm pedal.
Did you ask the previous owner about the last time the timing belt was changed? coolant hoses That is usually the first thing to do is change out these items after you get the brakes sorted anyway! Gotta be able to stop!

Thanks Clark, I just got back form a little spin. I de-greased the engin bay and cured the oil smoke problem (just nasty) and will now take photos and spins to check for leaks, The entire engine is next , I'd like to get in and go a little further each trip. The temp is spot on at 170-180 so thats a relief...Is there a visual for the timing belt that would indicate a DO IT NOW situation? PLEASE REPLY IF U KNOW...MIKE
