carb on a what?!

Post by mipstien »

have a small problem. i also couldn't find anything after searching.
i have a 1981 fiat spider. i am having trouble figuring out what carb is on the car. it SEEMS to me that the 1980's where the last cars that had carbs with a mix of carb and fuel injected in there. when i go to oreilly's here and try to find my parts for the carb rebuild they don't have any cross reference of a 1981 carb'd spider. am i goin crazy here or did someone possibly replace my engine with an older engine? and how do i figure these things out?

Stuff gets swapped around by previous owners all the time, so anything is possible. "A picture is worth a thousand words" Or look on the bottom flange of the carb for identification numbers stamped in it.

well my problem is that even after looking i couldn't find a defined number that suggested it was a 28 or 32 numbered carb. maybe i just dont' know where to look but i have pictures in the first post i made but im not sure its close enough to even point out where the number might be.
anyways does anyone know if 1981's had carbs at all that year? according to something i found it said there where some carbs up until like 85???? is this true? if it is then i could just be unlucky lol

From the 1-2 pictures I could see, that carb looks like a 32/36 DFEV You also have a points distributor. The PO has changed some things around, as 81 should be fuel injected. The usual vendors should have a rebuild kit for that carb, if not try webercarbsdirect, or piercemanfolds.

more pictures not sure if they are even worth looking at with the breather on top. ill take it off if i have to but it does look like the 32/36 that was on the weber direct web page.

Its either a Weber DGEV or a DFEV. The G or F designates the rotation/orientation of the linkage. E stands for electric choke. It could also be a Holley 5200.

The carb identification numbers will be stamped into the carb base flange that mates to the intake manifold. Usually the numbers are stamped on the side facing the cam box housing making them hard to read without either an inspeciton mirror, or removing the carb.

thank you very much that will help me a lot. it says weber on it so i would imagine that its one of the 2 you mention. i don't know anything about carbs so ill see what i can manage ;) all i really need is the diaphram so do you know if the one for the dfev and dgev are the same ?

By diaphram I assume you are talking about the accelerator pump diaphram, which is near the front of the carb on the drivers side. 4 screws. All weber dual barrel downdraft carbs use the same accelerator pump diaphram, except for the IDF's. There are a few vendors that sell just the diaphram itself. Your local Napa may have it in stock as they frequently carry the redline/weber product line.

strange then cause i got the diaphram in a kit for a weber rebuild and it wasn't the correct one just like 1cm too big on all sides..... little odd

81s were not carbed. Look at the mfg date on the vin plate on the left door jamb.
