Issue after filling with gas

Post by rmalicki »

Hey guys have a question about a possible fuel issue.
I've filled my baby with fuel four times and I keep having the same issue. I use only shell premium in all my vehicles. I fill my fiat every half a tank never below and the fuel filter is new. After I fill my fiat up I get in to start her and it wont kick over and I have to keep pumping the gas peddle for about a minute or two. Its almost like air enters the tank and vacuums the fuel back from the carburetor so its not primed. The fuel lines were all replaced by the previous owner a couple months ago after one of the line broke while driving. I haven't had a chance yet to open the hood and see if there is still fuel in the filter and carburetor after fueling her but I will next time. The idle is set at 1200rpms and starts normally every morning but does want to die if you don’t keep it revved up a bit the first couple of minutes. I'm not sure if there is a vacuum leak anywhere as I’m just starting to play with the car now. Any ideas or answers would be a great help. Thanks in advance Ryan

even if somehow all of the fuel drained from the filter and lines, you would still have fuel in the carb bowl. More than likely you have a flooding situation when you shut the engine off. If the float level is too high, you'll get fuel spilling over into the venturi when the engine is shut off and hot. When you try to restart within a couple of minutes, the motor is flooded.
To diagnose. warm the engine up, then shut it off and remove the air cleaner lid. Look into the carb throat with a flashlight and look for fuel dribbling in

I looked in and the carb. does have gas coming out of it and actually a little bit is coming out and onto the garage floor after driving. I'm not sure exactly whats causing it as i'm horrible at carburetors. Any help would be great. Maybe this is a time for me to send the work out?

leaking either internally or externally is not good. Leaks from the carb can drip onto the starter, then ignite when you crank the engine over. Check the fuel pump and lines for leakage. Leaks from the carb will usually be from the accelerator pump. But since the carb is spilling fuel into the venturi, it can leak out the throttle shaft.
