confused? running, now not running

Post by chief »

Chief here, Well I got the car running after some cleaning of the connectors and some basic troubleshooting, PO was only running power to one set of points, car ran great let it run for about two minutes and shut it down and back on then off again. went to fix some lunch and was going through a post about the vac hoses because mine has no egr valve and noticed in one of the post a mention about the condenser, oops! I forgot to put it back on. I did right to the positive post of the coil, and now it won't fire? What did I do? any hints, suggestions and or smart comments are all equally welcomed.

only one set of points is powered at any time, they get switched to change the timing for starting and certain emission situations. Disconnect your condensor and see if it starts, they can fail

Mark we are talking about the main condenser on the side of the fender wall right? I have taken back off and it still won't fire. I did not know why there were two sets of points, thanks for letting me know. let me clarfy the PO took and bypassed the ignition relay to get spark to only one set of points period. he ran a hot off of the D side of the coil to the points for the #'s 2 and 4 cylinders, would that only let half of the cylinders fire with this configuration? I am stupid so if you can enlighten me that would be great thanks

bypassing one set of points is not a problem, all 4 cylinders will still fire (as long as all of the lobes are still on the distributor shaft). Have you got a test light to check for power to the points?

Well went out this morning and the car cranked right up.
But I did noticed something I missed before.
When the temp gauge got up to a little over 200 it shut down and now won't start again.
Safety switch? Perhaps thermostat or water pump is bad will have to check it out when I get home today.
Whada think?

:D :D :D
Got it running!
Well it was worth it, when I got home it still wouldn't crank.
Previously I had rerouted the PO's wiring job and put everything back to it's original configuration, and it took off like a sewing machine then quit.
After work today I rerouted the wiring back avoiding the relay and it ran but rough it spit and sputtered and would die every five minutes or so.
Then I incorporated both sets of points and it ran again like a sewing machine. New Points definitly
As for the over heating I took and sprayed the connections to the sensors in the manifold with some electronic terminal cleaner and no more overheating.
I let it idle for about 45 min to an hour with no major problems.
It would sit and idle at about 1250 on the TACH
By the way what are the points to be set at?
Thanks for all the great help you have given so far.
