Risen Engine
Risen Engine
I'm a novice and my most recent effort at maintenance has resulted in what looks like a more serious problem. I installed a new transmission mount and after lowering my spider from the jack stands immediately discovered that the engine was higher in the engine compartment and that shifter was bulging from the console! What did I do wrong? Although it was a struggle, I'm fairly confident that I installed the transmission mount correctly. Did something get hung up? You experienced mechanic must get a lot of laughs reading these posts from neophytes like me.

Re: Risen Engine
I think the tranny mount has two mounting holes , one higher than the other, that line up with holes in the trans. for a bolt to fit. If the mount goes in backward, would'nt that lift the trans? Not sure if the mount onto the bottom of the car would work/line up if it was put on back to front.

Re: Risen Engine
I don't know if all years have the same shape but your mount has definetly been hit hard. This is a picture of my mount

Re: Risen Engine
Hal, what makes you think the mount has been hit? What year is you spider? Mine is a 1981 2000 FI. I changed the transmission mount and now the engine is 2-3 inches higher in the engine compartment and the shift lever also busted through the console and is 2-3 inches higher. I was under the car and did not notice the problem until I lowered it and sat in the driver's seat! Also, how did you post your pictures directly to your reply post? It's much better than using a link.
Re: Risen Engine
Ralph,
??? I see 4 photos on your photobucket link, but not really any details of the problem that you describe. 2 pictures of the car from different angles, and 2 more pictures of the driver's cockpit with the driver door open. Am I missing something? Do you have pictures of under the car or engine bay, that will show the problem?

Re: Risen Engine
I only see 4 photos too. If the trans mount was impacted, I would also believe the rear diff also hit that same object as it sits lower.
Like motor mounts, the trans mount sags over time, so when installing a new one you will notice the trans a bit higher. Granted 2-3 inches is odd. I'm guessing you installed the trans mount into the bracket, and the bracket is upside down. It should have the same shape as the one in Hal's picture. His picture is looking back towards the rear of the car.

I don't see any photos of the underside either, but I bet Matts' assessment is correct; the crossmember is upside down
Re: Risen Engine
Can somebody that sees Ralph's pictures repost them with a different link? My curiosity on this thing is killing me!!

LOL, you guys are sooooo later to the party. The pics were up earlier but the link has changed.
The trans support has definitely been hit, maybe in an accident.

Duh! I changed the photo bucket folder to post pictures of my car to "New Member" section. I'll try to repost the earlier photos of the tranny mount, engine comartment and shift lever. Gotta learn how to post directly to reply post.
