A few cars I have seen have this two bolts sticking out of the side of the engine block. What is mounted there? A/C compressor??

Re: What is supposed to go here??
I believe that would have been for the smog pump. Do not take out the remaining bolts as one of them will leak oil.

My '83 used those studs for the A/C bracket. If you take out the studs, you'll have a nice oil puddle when you run the engine. Son't ask me how I know!

A/C mounting bracket mounts there. That 78 I am working on had the compressor mounted there.

On my car that's where the turbo mounting bracket attaches.

Wachuko, Don't stop when you find the thread about Halg's turbo project, keep looking until you find his V8 Fiat Spider too.

Re: What is supposed to go here??
Thats the location for the 40 amp alternator that they stopped using. But its great for racing because there is less drag on the engine. You might go from 77 horsepower way up to 79 horsepower. Now thats technology

What! That is just insane! Weight would be an issue, would it not?rlux4 wrote:Wachuko, Don't stop when you find the thread about Halg's turbo project, keep looking until you find his V8 Fiat Spider too.

Re: What is supposed to go here??
yup!
we all have a habit of speed reading coupled with the erroneous assumption that EVERYONE's Fiat is exactly the same as their's. carefull reading of the original post would have revealed that this was an '83, which never had a smog pump, and always had the alternator on the driver's side of the engine.
great job wachuko! pop quizes are great things this time of year. keeps the cabin fever from setting in full blast. even though you originally fell for the wrong answer, don't miss the advice that removing the studs could cause a catostrphic loss of precious lubrication.
i use one of those studs as a mounting point for my secondary grounding cable. Every Spider should have a secondary grounding cable.

Re: What is supposed to go here??
Just chiming in- My '74 has the alternator mounted to those studs. My smog pump was mounted to other points, not those 2 studs. Also, my '74 doesn't use the external thermostat. I'm sure an '83 is a completely different setup, though.
