Removing transmission

Post by red107 »

What's the easiest way to remove the top bolts on the bell housing? I'm helping a friend get his car up and running and need to install a new clutch. I got the drive shaft removed and the transmission mount. I stopped for the day at the two upper bolts. figure i would drop it tomorrow and install the clutch, pressure plate, through out bearing.

This worked for me, but I am no expert. You are going to have to take the shifter assembly of to get it back in so I would start with that. You will have to remove the center council and attack that from the top. Only four bolts and it pops right off. Put the car up on four jacks assuming you are doing this in a garage. I had a buddy under the car with me and one guy using a floor jack to drop it down. Probably don't need all that help but seeing as working on these cars is sometimes a social event it will make it much easier.

Disconnect the battery if you haven't done that already.
Use a flex u-joint and plenty length of socket extensions to remove the three starter bolts (13mm socket). Use the same approach to remove the top 2 bell housing bolts. You may be able to loosen and remove the passenger side top bolt from inside the engine bay, with a closed-end wrech, but probably not enough room to get to the driver side top bolt due to all the brake and fuel lines and other stuff in the way.

Did you remove the shiter knob extension from the top? You should do that.

Thanks, I have removed everything except the two bolts on top. I figured I use a u joint socket and a long extension.

I use a universal with most of my extensions. The ratchet is somewhere around the rubber flex disk. Thought those were easier than the top bolt for the starter.

I loosen the motor mount bolts from the bottom of the cross member, put a jack under the oil pan and lightly jack up the motor until the cam boxes hit the firewall. This will give you a couple of extra inches.

I find it easier to access those two bolts with the engine and tranny pulled together.

Removed transmission today. Removed old clutch. Flywheel needs resurfacing. Thought is was just surface rust took some steel wool to see. Going to removed tomorrow and take to shop to have resurfaced. Anybody know the specs?

Subscribed. Also looking for the specs on that.

Removing my transmission to clean and check, and while in there might as well replace the seals, pilot bearing, check condition of the clutch, replace the release bearing, and resurface the flywheel.

Did you get all of the return springs and such hooked up? adjust the nut on the end of the cable?

While your at it, a simple mod that some like is taking a few pounds off the flywheel. Engine seems to spool up a bit quicker. Some like to leave things alone as well,it was designed with that flywheel and works fine. I like my lightened and balanced one though.

Chris, did you go with an aluminum flywheel or modified the original? If alu, who sells it? If modified stock unit, is that documented somewhere that I can take it to the local machine shop to get it done? Thank you in advaced.
