Oil Pan Gasket Replacement

Post by spidernut »

I tried to find the name of the person who posted a PDF file on the oil pan gasket replacement, but can't find the link anymore. Whomever posted it...THANKS! I replaced my oil pan gasket using the method that includes lowering the crossmember. It went smoothly and everything worked out perfectly. If it was you, give yourself a pat on the back for helping out another Fiatista.

I don't recall where I found the instructions on the web. In essence, it was: disconnect battery, unbolt motor mounts, support engine and transmission from the bell housing and jack engine up as high as possible without pinching wiring between the back of the motor and the firewall (or use an engine support from the top which would be safer), support the cross member with scissor or hydraulic jacks, unbolt the two upper bolts in cross member, unbolt the two sets of bolts in the bottom of the cross member, lower cross member. Remove pan, replace gasket and put it all back together again.

I didn't have to remove the oil pump doing it this way! It went very smoothly.

OK, thank you. I will try removing it now that the transmission is out.

Since the tranny is out, you'll have to support the motor from something other than the bell housing. A cherry picker would work well and be a safe method of supporting it.
