1"carb spacer

I'm looking into either making or having made a 1" carb spacer out of 6061 aluminum. Just curious if anyone else might be interested in one.

I think this topic was discussed at length in the performance section about a year ago. Carb spacers are used primarily to increase the intake phlenum area and runner length. They also insulate the carb from the heat of the manifold, aluminum will not be very good at insulating the carb from heat, unless you uses some thick paper or thin phenolic gaskets.

I have a 3/4" derlin spacer and a couple thin phenolic spacers/gaskets if you are interested.

after experiencing some issues with the '78 and vapor lock after a hard long run on a hot hot day... i went from zero spacer to a 12mm provided by IAP. no more vapor lock. Yeah, i am running a 32/36.

if you are going bigger than that (an inch?) don't forget to check your clearance between the air breather top and the hood !! Hate like heck to hear that you crunched your air breather, or worse, cracked your carburetor when you slam down the hood.

What size air cleaner are you running Mike? How much space do you think you have between your hood and air cleaner?
Do you think a 19mm spacer will work like the one Matt has?

in the '78 i run the 1 3/4"... but i do run the '80 with a 2 1/2" breather.

you can easily figure out how much room you have by setting a cone of Play Dough on top of your air breather, and closing the hood. then open the hood and measure the squashed Play Dough. it will press down to cover the gap between the hood and the air breather. Waa-laa! you know your clearance.

just don't let the grand daughter or her grandma find out what you do with their Play Dough when their not looking... don't ask how i know..

Are you going to wait until its clearcoated before you deal with those chunky welds at the side marker lights? My spacer is 3/4" and NOT 19mm! It will only be 19mm when it is shipped to Europe, or installed on the car. Just pokin ya in the ribs.

If you can wait until after Christmas I can get you some Derlin or UHMWPE material in 3/4" or 1" so you can make your own, $10 shipped to you.

Mine is 3/4" derlin, bolt holes are drilled and center oval hole is roughed out but needs "porting/blending" to suit the particular carb: $20 shipped to you.

No pladough? A ball of tinfoil works too.

So Matt: Have you noticed any change with the spacer installed? Were you looking to eliminate a specific problem?

I never installed it. It was set to go under my stock 32ADFA carb(two years ago), the point being to increase torque. Mostly as an experiment after reading up on carb spacers. I was saving it in case I came across a 32/36 DFEV, but I'm going to be switching to dual carbs soon, so I probably will not use it.

Those chucky welds are actually flat. I didn't weld completely across. There is a lip that goes behind the fender. I'll fill in the rest with Rage.

I was just giving you a hard time, I think its the flash that makes them stand out.

I actually have a 1" piece of UHMWPE material I was saving to install a 40 DCNF on a 1800 manifold, but that project is also probably a long way off so you can have that piece, I'll get another one when I go to Chicago for X-mas.

Derlin is good to around 300 deg, and the UHMWPE is probably around 400 deg. or more, I don't know exactly. It's much denser/harder than derlin. Granted the metal temp of the intake manifold is only around 200 deg.

Got the 1" carb spacer done. I used my scroll saw to cut out the shape and my drill press to make the holes.
