Steering wheel nut
Steering wheel nut
Does anyone know the thread size of the nut that holds the steering wheel on? I have a '76 that seems to be missing that key component. 16mm was too small, but 18mm was too big. I can't keep driving around with a pair of vice grips holding the wheel on...

Re: Steering wheel nut
Hope this is some help to you, I was able to look up the part number in the Fiat mech parts catalog, it is #10791421, hopefully one of the vendors could either tell you what size this is or has it in stock.
Re: Steering wheel nut
i happen to know someone that has a parts car. betcha he could supply a nut for your steering wheel.
Re: Steering wheel nut
i'll bet its a 17mm nut. You answered your own question. Metric is not only in even numbers.
You also have to get the right thread pitch.
LOL what size of vice grips?

In my case, the nut holding the wheel is about 6' tall and 190 lbs. I think the one you want is indeed a 17mm.

Re: Steering wheel nut
most people want to get rid of the nut behind the wheel, you want to add one?
Re: Steering wheel nut
17mm is turning out to be a very difficult size to find. NAPA says they can't even order it. Any thoughts on getting a die and grinding it down to 5/8"? mbouse, if the guy with the parts car has the part, I'm definitely interested. I banged the top threads up pretty bad taking the wheel off, so I'm wondering if I'll be able to get the nut on even if I can find the right size... The vice grips are a small pair I got from autozone. They hold the wheel on, but are somewhat of a safety hazard since they stick straight out from the center of the wheel.

If these guys don't have it it doesn't exist: http://www.mcmaster.com/# Be warned, if you are a guy and like hardware you can spend days surfing this site! If you can figure out the size and thread, they can mail you one. I am in SC and they are in Atlanta and I get stuff from them the day after ordering online without any shipping premium regularly.
To all, these guys have all kinds of stuff that can be used on cars, fasteners, clips, sheet metal, rubber, you gotta go to their site to beleive it!

Paul,
I should have one I just need to find it. If you are still looking let me know and I'll take a look this week.

Re: Steering wheel nut
if the threads are buggered up, you won't get a new nut on. At least get a thread file if you can't find a die
Re: Steering wheel nut
Success! I got the nut in the mail yesterday, it turned out to be a 16mm with 1.5 pitch. After getting some help from a local auto place with a 16mm die, it now fits perfectly. Where would I be without the Fiat Spider Forum?
