surging when accelerating
surging when accelerating
when driving the car when I reach the top speed of a gear the car starts to jerk like a first time driver in a standard. When I let off the gas the car seems to lose any power but it will come back and start to drive normal and the surginging starts again, any ideas?

What year car? Could be motor mounts if you have an early car.

Not sure fuel injected or carb?
Just an amature guess... small hole somewhere and the increased airflow sucking air where its not suposed to... leaning the engine out?

Re: surging when accelerating
sounds to me like you're starving for fuel on the top-end.
Check the fuel filter and the float level in the carb (assuming it's carb'd?)
It's also possible you've got a fuel pump going.... but I'd leave that for last, unless you've got a gauge and can easily test it.
let us know what you find?

I'm no Boy-Racer..... but if I can't take every on-ramp at TWICE the posted limit.... I'm a total failure!
Re: surging when accelerating
if you have a carbed engine with a mechanical fuel pump, you probably need a new pump. As stated previously though, the entire integrity of the fuel delivery system needs to be checked
Re: surging when accelerating
It is a 1976 with a carb I added a new electric fuel pump already. I will check the fuel filter and system any other ideas are greatly appreciated. Thanks.
Re: surging when accelerating
is the new pump back near the tank? How is the filter? Float level in the carb could be too low, there is a small screen in the inlet of the carb
Re: surging when accelerating
The pump is back by the tank and the filter is one of those cheap plastic ones up by the carb
Re: surging when accelerating
I agree that its probably a fuel problem, but there is that possibility that if you have points, they may be weak or floating above a certain rpm which is making your car feel like its surging being its happening at higher rpms. just another opinion
