Sea Foam??

Post by SpiderJim »

As anyone else tried seafoam? I just used it today on my number one spider with a few ounces in the gas and the same in the oil and the crap that blew out the engine was amazing. The local hot rod guys use it all the time and suggested I use it to clean out my gas tank on number two spider which was full of black goop from being in storage for ten years. I threw in a pint with a gallon of gas and watched the goop dissolve almost instantly. So far looks to be working!

I've used it many times in many different vehicles. It's great at breaking up carbon deposits and helping to stabilize fuel. I usually pour about half of a can in my motorcycle tank over the Iowa winter. I managed an auto parts store for more than 8 years and can say that it was the most sought after and recommended fuel/engine product we sold. It wasn't uncommon to sell a case of 24 or more per week in a town of around 10,000 people. The gentleman that started the company is also a really great guy. He's been around for a long time and was always more than happy to help answer any questions about the product.

Good Luck

You used it in the gas and oil? What is this stuff? It would seem that anything that can remove carbon deposits and varnish in fuel would not be something I would want in my oil. :?: More info, please? Sounds like an intersting product.

Thanks for the link. But it seems it is a fuel additive only. I may give it a try on my 1973 124 sedan, with the original (never been opened) 1400 OHV engine with 93,000 miles on it.

Seafoam has been around for a long time.A lot of people swear by it. If it seemed to help with the deposits in the tank,I may try some in the 77.Found a lot of crud in my float bowl, although the p/o wasnt running any fuel filter.

I've used sea foam on my vehicles with excellent results. On my tahoe, I used the manifold brake vacuum to suck it in directly for cleaning. Pull it in until it dies, let it set for 20 minutes and fire it back up, it does take a bit to get it started. Tons of crap come out of the exhaust but it runs a lot better afterwards. I use it in the gas to keep things clean and pick it up at Autozone.

You can get at most auto part or boat supply stores.
I have not used on my fiat but have used on my motorcycles. We just used some in a friends motorcycle that sat for months poured some in the tank let it run 15 minutes later you could hear the difference.

Years ago I had several chance to compare Sea-Foam with a General Motors product called Top Engine Cleaner. If I recall, they smell somewhat the same. When I had heads off of an engine, I would put SeaFoam on top of several pistons, and TopEngine cleaner on others. The Top engine cleaner would make very short work of the carbon, the Seafoam would barely touch it. The SeaFoam salesman ( who came on like a snake oil salesman in an old western) said it was because heat was needed for the SeaFoam to work.

Back in the 70's and 80's we used Top Enging Cleaner to clean injectors at the Gm dealerships, before they came out with a real injector cleaner, mix it 10:1 gas/TopEngine, pressurize and run system. Also used it to loosen stuck oil rings, good stuff. Read the warning label on can, way bad stuff to inhale. I wear a reserator when I use it (still use it a couple times a month for something).

ALthough I really have no way of knowing, I suspect that SeaFoam is basicly the same stuff as TopEngine Cleaner, although in a weaker concentration.

Top Engine Cleaner available at most GM dealerships. READ THE LABEL!!

Put some Sea Foam in the fuel tank of the 81, essentially stock FI spider this weekend. Used the amount recommended for "cleaning" applications, as opposed to "maintenance". Then took advantage of a gorgeous day to drive it over 200 miles at country road and freeway speeds. :-) Didn't notice anything at all in the way of crud or smoke out the exhaust, or changes in engine performance/smoothness or smells. Good news is, I also didn't have any problems after I used it!

This seems contrary to what everyone else has claimed? Has anyone ever looked in their cylinders (eyeball through plug hole or fiber optic scope) before and after to see if it really did anything?

After reading the posts, I went and got a can. Followed the video on the company's website and restarted the car.

White smoke came out for about 10 minutes. Nothing as the huge clouds that some people experience on online videos but enough to make me feel like it was doing its job.

Engine feels the same as before. Maybe a little more pep at high speed but can not tell the difference. Also, the car had a valve job not too long ago so SeaFoam just gave them a good clean. Changed the oil/filter after the smoke cleared.

Will use on a regular basis to keep everything clean.

Youi won't notice anything like crud or smoke out the tailpipe UNLESS you put it directly in the cylinders.
