I am reading and concluding that there are two types of idler, one with bushings and one with ball bearings??? But both must use oil as a damping fluid, right? Neither my Haynes or Fiat shop manual talk about topping up the oil in the idler and the top of my idler -- I think I am looking at the right gizmo -- looks nothing like the parts catalogues or the manuals. There is a sheet metal stamped cap on it held on by three screws at the rim and there is one screw in the middle. This is just below and inboard of the engine coolant overflow tank.
My steering is stiff and I want to just check the steering box and idler oil over the winter. Is that central screw by any chance the filler plug??? If not how in heck to you top up the idler?
Keep in mind that I am a budding backyard mechanic and it is like playing Where's Waldo. I look in the manual and then go out to the car and try to find something that looks like the picture. Back to picture. Back to car. Repeat.

Ya, that's the fill plug or you can remove the whole top. The new replacement idlers are totally different and have greased bearings.
