Differential oil capacity?

Post by dkpuryear »

Changed the diff oil on our 1982 2000 & could only get about 34 oz. (1 Qt + a bit) in the fill hole before it was running out as fast as going in. Car was level & on stands. Books ('81 owners' manual & Brooklands') say cap. is 1 & 2/5 Qt/1.3L, ~ = 44 oz. Do early & late diffs have identical oil capacity? Do we have 10 oz. of sludge in bottom of housing? Note: Could not heat oil before draining, but did let it drain until dripping stopped. About same amount came out (1 Qt + a bit), & I assumed it was low due to various leaks. Drained oil was dark, but had no significant wear particles included. Drain plug magnet had only fine particles adhering. Ken Puryear

I changed oil on a 72 diff yesterday while it was out of the car and on a bench. I think I have the same numbers as you.
There might be some hiding in the axle tubes, not sure though.
I'd run it for a bit and then check the levels again.

You can get more in if you raise the front or lower the rear of the car. 1.3 litres is correct, at least for a '78.
