Fuel Pump

Post by Bill Pottle »

On my 82 I suspect that the fuel pump is not working correctly. When I turn the ignition to the on position I can hear it working but won't fire up the car. I can't get it to fire, it just whirls the engine. I took out a plug and it wasn't wet so am I on to something? What's the best way to confirm a pump problem. Does the pump ever shut off if it builds up to the right pressure in the on position without turning it over?

Thanks,
Bill

with the key on, engine not turning the pump should only run for 2 seconds then shut off. For the pump to run the AFM flap has to move. There is a switch inside that closes once the flap moves.
The pump does not shut off at any pressure point.

Mark,

Now that you mention it the AFM cover made be holding it from moving. I'll check that since it is a homemade cover ( can't get a new one). You say the fuel pump when on but engine not working should go off in a few seconds... It stays on. If the AFM flap is moving does this mean the pump is bad since it never shuts off in the on position not running?

Thanks,
Bill

it's not a pump problem, but a control circuit problem. Current to the pump should stop if the engine isn't turning. When you take the AFM cover off you'll see a set of contact points. They should be open when the afm flap is closed, and they should open as soon as the flap moves from the closed position. If they're out of adjustment, merely bend the arm slightly
