Feels like Clutch is slipping when car is warm

Post by alex »

Hi,

I noticed recently that when my car is first started, and for about 20 minutes after it gets to oerating temperature, driving is incredibly smooth and good starts are easy to pull off, BUT once the engine has been running for awhile, especially if I'm in traffic, smooth starts become absolutely impossible - the car shakes and stutters like I have a bad clutch (or I'm just learning to drive a stick). But I've tested the clutch and it's fine in higher gears, and like I said, fine when cold.

Any ideas what's going on????

chatter or shudder isn't the usual result of a slipping clutch. At a slow speed, put the shifter in 3rd and try to accelerate. If it's slipping the rpm will rise without much acceleration.
Chatter could be the result of a damaged clutch disc hub spring, or a disc that has oil on it. But maybe you have an engine issue? misfire or carb problem since it has to warm up first

I assume it's an engine issue since the engine needs to warm up, but I have no idea what to look at. The carb is brand new, so that seems unlikely and it's odd that it only happens when pulling away from a dead stop. anyone had any kind of similar problem?

even a new carb may not be jetted properly, if it's too lean it can cause some problems
