Air conditioning

I just bought an 83 spider with 43,000 original miles on it. It has air conditioning, which does not work. I'm sure this is a common problem, a friend of mine who is a mechanic took a quick look at it and traced the problem to a relay. My question is where is the air conditioning relay in an 83 spider.

how did the mechanic verify the bad relay without finding it?

The mechanic was up in northern california and looked at the vehicle before I picked it up. I did not spend alot of time asking the questions about the air conditioning as I should have. I just spoke with him and he told me that it's charged and somehow he got the compressor working but the problem was electrical and traced it back to the relay. I did not follow up and ask where the relay was. I would like to start there first and then work my way up to the more expensive stuff.
